New Research Project Aims to Bring Quantum Communication to the Chip

Integrierte-optische-Schaltung

In the new PIC-PAM research project, partners from Thuringia are developing a more compact generation of hardware for quantum key distribution (QKD). Several optical and electronic components that were previously separate are to be integrated onto a chip measuring just a few millimeters in the future.

What's new about this is that quantum communication today often requires complex and relatively large specialized hardware. By integrating it onto a single chip, future systems could be smaller, more affordable, and easier to integrate into existing fiber-optic networks.

In the long term, this could help make quantum-secure communication more widely available—for example, for data centers, critical infrastructure, or public institutions. Ultimately, citizens will also benefit from this if sensitive data can be better protected in the future against cyberattacks and the risks posed by powerful quantum computers.
